Led all Tar Heel starters and ranked fourth in the ACC with a 2.94 ERA...also led the team with two complete games and took over as a member of Carolina's weekend pitching rotation in mid-March...struck out six and did not allow a run in 6.0 innings versus Temple Feb. 27, picking up his first win of the year...had what was then the longest outing of his career, 8.0 innings, on March 21 versus Wake Forest, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs while picking up the win in the critical third-game of the weekend series...in a five-appearance stretch March 31...Apr. 17, posted a 2-1 record with two complete games and an ERA of 0.33 ...allowed one earned run and struck out 26 in 27.0 innings in that span...pitched brilliantly April 4 at NC State but was a hard-luck loser in a 3-1 loss to the Wolfpack...struck out a season-high nine and allowed just four hits and no earned runs in 7.0 innings...tossed his first-ever complete game in his next start, allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out six in a 4-2 win at Maryland...pitched his second straight complete game and the second of his career on April 17 vs. Virginia, striking out 10 and allowing six hits and one earned run in a 3-2 Carolina win...tied his season-high with 10 strikeouts and picked up the win April 23 versus Duke...tossed 6.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits, in a May 15 win over Georgia Tech.

Named a 1998 Honorable Mention Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball...Ranked seventh in the ACC in strikeouts per nine innings with 9.29 ... a member of UNC's pitching rotation throughout the season as a true freshman...among the team leaders in starts (15/tied second), appearances (17/third), innings pitched (82.1/fourth), strikeouts (85/third), runners picked off (five/first)...led Tar Heel starters by holding opposing batters to a .255 batting average...won his first career ACC start (March 6 against Maryland), allowing two hits and no runs while striking out 11 in 7.0 innings pitched ... on March 20 at #2 Miami, struck out 12, including seven in a row at one point, allowing just two hits and no runs against perhaps the best hitting team in the nation ... was hampered in midseason with a sore pitching shoulder that affected his control...earned an ACC win at Duke Apr. 17 ... missed an Apr. 26 start against N.C.
