As a Sophomore (2002)
Selected by his teammates as one of the two most improved players on the team after an outstanding sophomore season • Started 41 games and finished with a .333 batting average • Hit 10 home runs and had 31 RBIs in just 171 at bats • Hit safely in 26 out of his final 30 games of the season from April 7 to June 2 • Came off the bench and hit a pinch-hit home run versus Connecticut on Feb.24 • Went 2-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored on March 17 against Maryland • Had a perfect 4-for-4 performance against Charlotte on April 9 including a home run and two RBIs • Hit home runs in consecutive wins over NC State on April 20-21 and raised his average from .286 to .306 during that series • Had two doubles and an RBI in a 2-for-4 game against Miami on April 26 • Had an 11-game hitting streak from April 28-May 22 in which he went 17-for-31 (.548) and had 15 RBIs • Recorded three consecutive two-hit games in victories over Miami, Elon and East Carolina from April 28-30 • Went 3-for-4 including his first career two-home-run performance and a career-high five RBIs at Duke on May 12 • Homered again in the series finale versus Duke, giving him three home runs over the course of two games • Went 4-for-12 at the ACC Tournament including two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored. Summer 2002: An all-star with the Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod League • Hit .250 with nine doubles and finished the summer as the league’s top defensive first baseman.
As a Freshman (2001)
Led all freshman by playing in 55 games, with 53 starts • UNC’s top freshman at the plate • Led the team with 24 starts at first base, and was the DH in 18 starts • Batted near .300 the entire season but struggled over the final two weeks of the year to finish at .277 • Accounted for the two longest hit streaks of the year — 11 games from March 2-21 and 12 games from March 27-April 13 • Started his career by getting at least one hit in his first six games and eight of his first nine • Singled in the first two at bats of his career and finished the season-opener 2-for-3 • Broke up a scoreless tie versus Seton Hall on Feb. 24 with an RBI double in the seventh; later scored in the inning as the Tar Heels prevailed 3-0 • Scored the game-tying run in the first game of the UCLA doubleheader on March 2 in the bottom of the eighth inning; UNC went on to win that game 8-7 in the 11th inning; began an 11-game hitting streak in that UCLA win • Got off to a great ACC start by going 6-for-13 in the Wake Forest series (March 16-18); was 2-for-5 in the series-opener and 3-for-5 with two RBIs in Saturday’s loss to the Deacs • Also played well at Florida State (March 23-25); sparked Carolina’s five-run sixth inning on Saturday against the Seminoles with his first career home run, a three-run shot to left-center field; finished the series with three hits and four RBIs • Began his team-high 12-game hitting streak on March 27 against Elon • Drove in six runs in the NC State series (March 30-April 2), including a two-run homer in the top of the first of Carolina’s series-ending, 8-7 victory in Raleigh • Was 3-for-5 at VCU on April 4 and started the Maryland series (April 6-8) with a two-run double in the top of the first on Friday against the Terps; had another two-run double in the middle-game of the series and added a two-run single and an RBI double in the series-finale at Maryland; was 5-for-15 with seven RBIs overall in the series • Was 3-for-5 with a career-high three runs against Liberty (April 1) • Was 1-for-19 over the final six games of the year. Summer 2001: Had a big summer with the Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod League • Batted .255 with two home runs and 22 RBIs.
