Flanagan Named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week

Dec. 2, 2003

Shalane Flanagan has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week, the publication announced on Nov. 25. Flanagan won the NCAA Cross Country National Championship on Nov. 24. She ran a time of 19:30.4 over the 6 km course in Waterloo, Iowa.

Flanagan became the first woman to win two straight cross country national championships since Carole Zajac of Villanova (1992-93). Flanagan has won ten straight races to end her career as she also was the ACC Champion and NCAA Southeast Regional Champion in cross country the past two years. Flanagan helped lead UNC to an eighth-place finish overall in last week's NCAA Championships.
