Shalane Flanagan Named Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week

CHAPEL HILL -- Shalane Flanagan became the first woman to win the ACC cross country championship in four consecutive seasons and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for October 27-November 2, 2003.

Flanagan, a senior from Marblehead, Mass., won the ACC Cross Country Championship with a time of 19:22.8 in the 6k race. Flanagan led the UNC Women's squad to the team title, as they totaled 40 points, four ahead of N.C. State. Flanagan came in 27 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and became the first woman in history to win four-straight ACC Cross Country titles.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

McGovern was the top Tar Heel finisher at the Men's ACC Cross Country Championships. He placed 17th overall with a time of 25:12.9 and helped UNC earn half a point in the Carlysle Cup standings, as the team finished one place ahead of Duke.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Poway, Calif.

Green recorded 14 kills and a career high six block solos in a 3-1 win over N.C. State at Carmichael Auditorium. Green also contributed three kills and three blocks at Florida State.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Mary McDowell
Forward, Junior
Lakewood, Colo.

McDowell came off the bench to score her third goal of the season and second game-winning goal of the year as No. 1 North Carolina defeated No. 9 Florida State 1-0 to wrap up an unbeaten and untied regular season, the only team in the country to do so.

FIELD HOCKEY

Douglas scored two goals and added an assist over the weekened as fourth-ranked Carolina won road games against No. 12 Old Dominion and No. 14 William & Mary to finish out the regular season 16-4.
