Shalane Flanagan Named Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY For the second consecutive year, Flanagan won the NCAA Preview 6k race in Waterloo, Iowa. Flanagan, running against many of the top runners in the nation, won the meet with a time of 19:29.5, good for over 30 seconds before the second-place finisher. The team as a whole finished second with 99 points. Other nominees:
WOMEN'S SOCCER Ramsey had her best week of the season in leading the Tar Heels to a pair of ACC wins. On Tuesday, she assisted on three goals including the game winner by Lindsay Tarpley as the Tar Heels blanked No.13/No. 16 Wake Forest 6-0. Three nights later Ramsey scored UNC's first two goals, assisted on the third and set up the fourth on a penalty kick. Ramsey notched the game winner against Clemson in the 6-1 win. UNC improved to 16-0 (ACC 5-0). She has five goals (two game winners) on the season and leads UNC and the ACC and ranks second nationally in assists with 17.
FOOTBALL For the third consecutive week, freshman linebacker Larry Edwards led the team in tackles. Against Arizona State, Edwards registered a season-high 15 stops, including 13 primary tackles and two assists. He also had a tackle for loss. Edwards is the first true freshman to start at linebacker at UNC since Tommy Thigpen in 1989.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Eckert had a career high 24 kills, as well as nine digs in a 3-2 win over Duke in front of a record crowd of 16,126 people at the Smith Center. Eckert also recorded ten kills and 15 digs in a 3-1 win over Wake Forest.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY McGovern was the top UNC finisher at the 8k NCAA Preview meet. McGovern finished in 75th place with a time of 24:41.4
MEN'S SOCCER
Watson's goal in the 70th minute was the equalizer in the Tar Heels' 1-1 tie
at NC State Sunday. The goal was his fifth of the season and he is now tied
for the team lead with 15 points in 2003. He also leads the squad with five
assists.
