The University of North Carolina women's cross-country team member, Shalane Flanagan, earned her first ACC Performer of the Week in 2002, and third overall, after finishing first at the Great American Festival, September 27, in Charlotte, N.C. Flanagan ran the 5K in 17:48.1 to finish first out of 174 competitors. She helped the Tar Heels place fourth out of 25 teams, bettering six ranked teams. Amongst the top 10 Carolina defeated were No. 2 Georgetown and No. 7 Arkansas.

The Tar Heels will participate in the NC Collegiate Championship, in Greenville, N.C., October 12.
