Carolina women finish fourth; men finish 18th in Great American Festival

The University of North Carolina men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the Great American Festival tonight in Charlotte, N.C. The Tar Heel women finished in fourth place behind No. 1 BYU, while the men finished 18th behind No. 7 Northern. Shalane Flanagan finished first in the women's 5K with her time of 17:48.1, besting two BYU Cougars. The women collected 164 points and the men scored 438 points.

The top four finishers for the Tar Heel women were Flanagan, Erin Donohue (19:06.4/19th), Liz Awtrey (19:32.6/43rd) and Alice Schmidt (19:36.3/46th). Pacing the men's team were Brian McGovern finishing 29th with his time of 27:16.8. Rob Robertson (28:10.2/81st), Joel Thomas (28:15.5/86th) and Matt Daly (29:01.1) rounded out the top four for Carolina.

The Tar Heels will compete at the NC Collegiate Championship on October 12, 2002, in Greenville, N.C. for their next race.
