Brian McGovern Named Hardee's Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week

Brian McGovern won the men's cross country race at the Wake Forest Invitational and is the Hardee's Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week for September 6-12, 2004. McGovern, a senior from Newton, Conn., took the men's 5K race in 15:12 to lead the Tar Heels, who held off runner-up Wake Forest.

Kelsey Keeran, a senior forward, scored four goals in last week's two games, both road wins. On Friday at Delaware, she had a hat trick as UNC won 5-1. On Sunday at Penn State, Keeran scored another goal as UNC improved to 6-0 on the season. She leads the Tar Heels with eight goals on the season.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Sophomore
Killingly, Conn.

Owen, a sophomore from Killingly, Conn., won the women's 5K race in 17:30 to pace No. 14 Carolina, which knocked off the 11th-ranked Demon Deacons.

McCarty had a goal and two assists en route to all-tournament honors at the 2004 Carolina Nike Classic. Against Florida International on Friday, McCarty assisted on Jamie Watson's second goal of the night. In Sunday's loss to VCU, McCarty picked up an assist on Marcus Storey's goal, which gave Carolina an early 1-0 and later scored 17 seconds into the second half to tie the match at two. On the year, he has two goals and two assists for a team-best six points.

Lindsay Tarpley, a junior forward from the University of North Carolina, scored her first goal of the season and assisted on another as the Tar Heels defeated Mississippi State 4-1 at the First Tennessee Lady Vol Soccer Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Sunday. The win improved Carolina to 5-0-1 on the season after the Tar Heels saw their 31-match winning streak halted when they battled tournament host Tennessee to a 0-0 draw on Friday, Sept. 10.
