Tar Heels Close Out Season At NCAA Championships
Nov. 20, 2006 TERRE HAUTE, IND. - The University of North Carolina women's cross country team, led by a top-25 finish from sophomore Brie Felnagle, finished 31st at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships held Monday afternoon. The rest of the Tar Heels, though, struggled to match Felnagle's pace at the front as the team amassed 755 points to finish in last position. The Stanford women claimed the team title with a 195-point total. Felnagle's 21:15 time on the 6K LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center put her across the line in 22nd place and earned her All-America honors. Next for Carolina was senior Cassie King, who finished 199th in 23:01.9, and junior Megan Kaltenbach, who finished 218th in 23:27.4. Junior Addie Bracy ran a 23:48.1 to place 232nd and was immediately followed by sophomore Emily Hoffman, who clocked a 23:50.6 and placed 233rd to round out the scoring for UNC. Sophomores Morgan Stengel (242nd/24:04.6) and Laura Cummings (243rd/24:07.2) also competed for North Carolina. Felnagle, a sophomore from Tacoma, Wash., finished 45th as a freshman to lead the Tar Heels in last year's championships. The race marked the ninth straight year Carolina competed in the NCAA Championships - every year since the field expanded to 31 teams in 1998. UNC is one of only seven schools to accomplish that feat. The Colorado men joined the Stanford women as team champions. Sally Kipyego, a Texas Tech sophomore, posted a 20:11.1 time to claim first place on the women's side, while BYU senior Josh Rohatinsky claimed the title in the men's race with his 30.44.9 10K time.
