UNC Women's Cross Country Wins NCAA Southeast Regional

Greenville, N.C. - The North Carolina women's cross country team took first place at the NCAA Southeast Regionals with 52 points. Senior Shalane Flanagan won her fourth race of the season, and sophomore Carol Henry and junior Erin Donohue came in second and third respectively. The UNC men's squad finished ninth overall.

Flanagan, who has won every race she has been in this season, came in first with a time of 19:44.4 in the 6k race. Henry followed right behind in second, with a time of 20:01.5. Donohue completed the sweep of the top three spots with a time of 20:17.0 for the third-place spot.

The women's team finished first with 52 points, 12 ahead of second-place finishing N.C. State. The Tar Heels solidified their national ranking of third by winning the meet. Sophomore Jessica Perry finished 19th with a time of 20:53.0. Freshman Meg Owen placed 27th (21:05.2) and freshman Megan Kaltenbach came in 39th with a time of 21:25.0. Freshman Kristin Stroupe rounded out the Carolina field with a 44th-place finish (21:31.7).

Junior Brian McGovern led the Carolina men's squad with a 31st-place finish and a time of 31:03.0 in the 10k race. Sophomore Pablo Durana came in 45th (31:31.3) and senior Robert Borbet followed with a time of 31:41.9 and a 50th-place finish. Junior Jesse Rappole placed 52nd with a time of 31:45.8 and sophomore Rob Robertson came in 62nd with a time of 31:58.8. Finishing out the field for Carolina were junior Matt Daly and junior Matt Sciandra. Daly placed 94th (32:45.3) and Sciandra was 97th (32.47.4).

 

 

The final competition for the season will come Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa at the NCAA National Championships. Flanagan will look to defend her title at the meet.
