Flanagan Leads Women's Cross Country To Second Place Finish At NCAA Pre-National

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Running a 19:30 6K, Shalane Flanagan won her second meet of the season after running in as many meets at the Northern Iowa-hosted NCAA Pre-Nationals Saturday. She led the North Carolina women's cross country team to a runner-up finish behind Brigham Young at the meet, which featured 32 teams. Representing the men's cross country team as one of two individual Carolina competitors, junior Brian McGovern was the top North Carolina runner with a time of 24:41 in the 8K. He finished in 75th place out of 238 runners, trailed by senior teammate Scott Price, who finished the race in 26:14. Flanagan, who won the race for the second consecutive year, beat her 2002 time by 27 seconds. McGovern, also finishing in the exact same place as his performance in last year's meet, knocked the same amount as Flanagan off his previous time. Sophomore Carol Henry was the number two finisher for the Tar Heels, finishing fourth overall in the 210-runner meet with a time of 20:12. She was followed by junior Erin Donohue, who ran a 20:38 to place seventh. Two freshmen, Megan Kaltenbach and Meghan Owen, ran close together, finishing in 40th and 46th place, respectively. Kaltenbach finished in 21:18, just four seconds ahead of Owen, who ran a 21:22. Freshman Kristin Stroupe placed 69th with a time of 21:45.9. Freshman Kerry Brewer rounded out Carolina's competitors, placing 179th with a time of 23:19.
The North Carolina cross country teams will next compete at the ACC Championship at Wake Forest on Sat., Nov. 1. The men's race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women's competition at 11 a.m.
