No. 11 Carolina Takes Second at Great American

Final Stats

The 11th-ranked University of North Carolina women's cross country team placed second Friday evening in the 5K Nike Race of Champions at the Great American Cross Country Festival at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Tar Heels finished with 85 total points, second to No. 18 Duke's 56. Defending NCAA runner-up and third-ranked BYU was fourth with 124 points and No. 5 NC State was sixth with 142.

Carolina was led individually by Carol Henry and Erin Donohue who finished second and third overall in times of 16:58.12 and 16:59.41, respectively. Duke's Shannon Rowbury was the top individual in 16:42.64.

Meghan Owen, ACC Performer of the Week for her win September 11 at Wake Forest, was UNC's next scorer at 14th in 17:39.96. Jennie Sucher was 30th in 18:09.13 and Jessica Perry was 36th in 18:12.35 to round out the scoring for the Tar Heels.

Other Carolina competitors were Alice Schmidt (47th in 18:24.15), Nicole Boykin (62nd in 18:50.08), Kerry Brewer (67th in 18:57.17), Anna Hay (74th in 19:04.43) and Cassie King (78th in 19:07.79).

Addie Bracy competed in the open race and finished 15th in 19:23.78.

On the men's side, Carolina was led in the 8K Nike Race of Champions by a strong performance by Brian McGovern. McGovern finished seventh overall with a time of 24:46.97, besting all other ACC runners but NC State's Bobby Mack (fourth) and Virginia's Will Christian (fifth).

 

 

Tom Falvey was next at 34th in 25:33.25, followed by Matt Daly and Jesse Rappole who finished right together at 91st and 92nd in 26:41.33 and 26:41.39. Rob Robertson was Carolina's final scorer at 104th in 26:54.33. The Tar Heels finished 11th out of 19 teams overall with 313 points. Other ACC teams in the race were NC State (second), Virginia (eighth) and Duke (18th).

Ryan Shaver (106th in 26:56.32) and Alex Ray (119th in 27:23.76) also competed for UNC in the Race of Champions. Jeff Peterson ran in the open 8K race and finished 31st in 27:58.08.
