Cross Country Packs Finish Strong
Sept. 18, 2004 Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina cross country team turned in two wins despite rainy conditions at the UNC Cross Country Challenge Saturday at the Ranson-Hamrick Cross Country Course. The women's team dominated the race against Coastal Carolina and the UNC Alumni, finishing with 21 points. The men's team earned 29 points to finish ahead of the same opponents. Senior Erin Donohue and junior Carol Henry teamed up to give repeat performances of the 2003 UNC Challenge, finishing first and second, respectively, within three-tenths of a second of each other. Donohue won the 5K in 17:33.17. The men's race also had a cluster of Tar Heel runners toward the front with junior Tom Falvey and seniors Matt Daly and Brian McGovern finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Falvey ran a 25:42 8K, Daly had a 25:42.87, and McGovern had a 25:42.88. "Our men's front four did a great job running together," said head coach Michael Whittlesey. "We're running very well as a pack." Sophomore Meghan Owen, last week's ACC Performer of the Week, finished third in the women's race, 22 seconds behind Henry. Jennie Sucher, a graduate student, came in sixth, and junior Jessica Perry rounded out Carolina's top five in ninth place. In the men's race, Jesse Rappole came in seventh place and Alex Ray was 10th. After two meets the men's and women's teams are undefeated. "I am extremely optimistic (about this season)," said Whittlesey. "We're seeing what we need to see in these early meets."
