Carolina Waterscapes Player of the Week: Shalane Flanagan

Shalane Flanagan.

Shalane Flanagan, a junior distance runner from Marblehead, Mass., is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for September 23-29.

Flanagan won her first race of the season at the Great American Festical, in Charlotte, N.C. Flanagan beat 173 competitors with a time of 17:48.1 in the women's 5K. She helped lead unranked Carolina to a fourth place finish (out of 26 teams), beating out seven ranked opponents, including two Top 10 in No. 2 Georgetown and No. 7 Arkansas.

Other nominees:

Holly Strauss, senior middle hitter from Dundas, Ont. recorded 20 kills in two volleyball matches (3.33 per game) with a hitting percentage of .400. Also recorded a team-high 1.33 blocks per game as the No. 15 Tar Heels went 2-0.

Aly Winget, a freshman goalie from Orinda, Calif., did not allow a goal in UNC's two-game trip to the West Coast, blanking Oregon 3-0 and earning a scoreless draw with fourth-ranked Portland on the Pilots' home field. Winget made six saves in the draw against Portland.
