Tar Heels Well Represented on ACC Top 50 Women's Track Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina women's track teams placed a total of 18 athletes on the Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Teams, announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

The Tar Heels placed 15 current and former student-athletes on the 51-member indoor team, the most of any school. Clemson had the second highest representation with nine honorees, followed by Virginia (7), Georgia Tech (6), Florida State (5), Maryland (3), Wake Forest (3), NC State (2), and Duke (1).

Carolina also had the most members on the outdoor team, with 13 current and former Tar Heels on the 51-member outdoor team. Clemson again had the second highest total with 10, followed by Virginia (7), Georgia Tech (5), Florida State, Maryland(4), NC State (4), Wake Forest (3) and Duke (1).

LaShonda Christopher, LaTasha Colander, Sharon Couch, Shalane Flanagan, Nicole Gamble, Joy Ganes, Monique Hennagan, Kendra Mackey, Joan Nesbit and Tisha Waller were named to both the indoor and outdoor teams. Ayo Atterberry, Kim Austin, Penny Blackwell, DeAnne Davis and Michelle Faherty earned spots on just the indoor team, while Marion Jones, Lynda Lipson and Rebecca Russell were honored just for their performance in outdoor.
