ACC Names Women's Cross Country 50th Anniversary Team

The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 50th Golden Anniversary Team today. NC State led all conference schools with 17 members, Clemson ranked second with seven members and North Carolina was third with six members. Wake Forest had five for fourth, Duke and Georgia Tech each had two members, while Maryland finished with one member. The six selections for the Carolina Tar Heels were Shalane Flanagan (2000-present), Karen Godlock (1994-97), Susanna Matsen (1994-96), Holly Murray (1983-86), Joan Nesbit (1981-84) and Trish Nervo (1997-00). Flanagan has been named a two-time All-American after finishing fourth (2000) and 19th (2001) at the NCAA Championships. She has won the ACC Championship in both seasons and has been a first place finisher at the NCAA Regionals. Flanagan was named 2001 NCAA Athlete of the Year for cross country and ACC Runner of the Year. She was named All-ACC for the second consecutive season and earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors in 2000. Godlock won three straight ACC Championships (1994, 1995 & 1996) and was the first woman to accomplish this feat. She won two NCAA Regional titles (1994, 1995) for the Tar Heels and was an All-ACC performer for three consecutive seasons. Matsen was another All-American for the Tar Heels earning this honor in 1994 and 1995. She was named All-ACC and All-District in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Matsen had four top five finishes for the Tar Heels in her senior season and finished in the top 10 in the ACC Championship. Murray was an All-ACC performer for the Tar Heels in 1984 and 1985. She was named All-American in 1983, 1984 and 1985 after finishing 16th, fourth and sixth in each respective year. Murray also finished second at the 1982 National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships having one of the most impressive freshman seasons at Carolina. Nesbit had a 15th place finish in the 1984 NCAA Championship and was named to the All-America team. She earned All-ACC honors after a seventh place finish at the conference championship. Nervo was an All-ACC honoree for three consecutive seasons for the Tar Heels. She won the NCAA Southeast Regional and finished 15th in the NCAA Championships in 1999. Nervo was named to the 1999 All-American and All-District teams as well.
