Owens, King Shine At NACAC Under-23 Championships

July 9, 2006

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic --- North Carolina's Nick Owens and Cassie King won medals at the recently completed North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Track & Field Championships at the Estadio Félix Sánchez. The meet, which is held every two years, pits young athletes (under age 23) from NACAC member nations against one another.

Owens, a rising senior from Shelton, Wash. who recently claimed third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, was the gold medalist in the men's hammer throw. His mark of 222 feet, 8 inches (67.87 meters) topped Auburn's Jake Dunkleberger.

King, a recent graduate from Kernersville, N.C., won silver in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:36.97 was second to Brown's Anna Willard.
