INDIANAPOLIS --- Former North Carolina standout Shalane Flanagan won the women's 5,000-meter run to highlight action at the USA Track and Field Championships last week at IUPUI's Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium. Flanagan dominated the field with a time of 14 minutes, 51.75 seconds, more than 16 seconds better than the runner-up.

Former Tar Heel Erin Donohue was also a medalist, taking third in the 1,500 in 4:08.22. Alice Schmidt, a former teammate of both Flanagan and Donohue, made it three medalists for Carolina women when she finished third in an extremely tight 800 meters in 1:59.63.

Several other athletes with UNC ties advanced to finals this week. Former Olympic gold medalist Monique Hennagan was sixth in the 400 in 51.28. Ola Sesay was eighth in the long jump with a top mark of 21-0 (6.40m). Another former Tar Heel gold medalist, Allen Johnson, was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 13.60.

Sheena Gordon, a NCAA champion while in Chapel Hill, was fifth in the high jump with a top clearance of 6-0 (1.83m). Gordon was also fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 44-4 1/4 (13.52m). Adam Shunk, who also won an NCAA high jump title while at Carolina, finished tied for second with a top clearance of 7-4 1/4 (2.24m).

Recent NCAA runner-up Nick Owens was eighth in the hammer with a throw of 223-9 (66.97m), while current Tar Heel Adam Montague was 11th in the javelin with a mark of 231-7 (70.58m).
