Four Tar Heels Receive All-America Recognition
June 12, 2007 CHAPEL HILL --- Owing to their outstanding respective performances at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track And Field Championships last week, four members of the University of North Carolina men's and women's track and field teams have been named All-America performers, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday. The three All-Americas on the men's side all come in the throws events as Justin Ryncavage (javelin), Adam Montague (javelin) and Nick Owens (hammer) garnered the honor. Ryncavage won his second straight national championship last week in Sacramento, becoming the first male athlete in UNC track and field history to win two national titles in the same event. Montague and Owens both turned in runner-up performances in their events, helping the Tar Heel men to a sixth place team finish, their best since finishing fourth in 1996. Brie Felnagle was the lone All-America for the UNC women, earning the accolade with a stellar, national championship-winning performance in the women's 1,500 meters. Felnagle also set a new school record in winning the event and claimed her fourth All-America honor of the 2006-2007 school year. She also earned the designation for her efforts at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall, where she finished 22nd, and was a two-time indoor All-America in 2007, finishing fifth in the 3,000 meters and helping UNC to its second consecutive title in the distance medley relay. Felnagle and Shalane Flanagan are the only women in school history to be named All-America in all three sports in the same school year. In Division I track and field, the top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, including relays, are eligible for All-America status. In the individual (non-relay) events, if one or more of the top eight finishers are of another nationality, eight American-born athletes are selected in addition to any foreign-born All-Americans.
