Reynolds, Stengel Earn Academic Honors

June 5, 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina student-athletes Ian Reynolds and Morgan Stengel have earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District track and field/cross country honors, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Reynolds was named to the men's first team and Stengel to the women's second team.

Morgan Stengel

Reynolds, a senior from Skillman, N.J., competed in the shot put for the Tar Heels. He graduated from UNC in May, majoring in political science with a 3.68 grade point average. Reynolds was a two-time NCAA Regionals qualifier and finished eighth at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships. He twice was named the team's winner of the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award, and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team following his sophomore and junior seasons. (The 2008 team has yet to be announced.) He is a graduate of the Carolina Leadership Academy and a recipient of its highest honor, the Three-Dimensional Leader Award. At Carolina, he represented the track and field team as part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Stengel, a junior from Nashville, Tenn., competed for both the cross country and track and field teams during the 2007-08 school year. A business administration major, she carries a GPA of 3.95. Stengel was a 2008 NCAA Regional qualifier in the steeplechase with a career-best mark of 10:47.66 and finished ninth in the 5,000 at this spring's ACC Outdoor Championships. She was named to the 2007 All-ACC Academic Team for cross country and will serve as a team captain for 2008-09.

To be a candidate for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better. First and second teams in University and College divisions were announced Thursday for eight districts across the U.S. After another round of voting among those named to the first teams, Academic All-America teams will be announced on June 23 (men) and 25 (women). As a member of the All-District first team, Reynolds will be on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
