Justin Ryncavage Named Carolina Performer Of The Week

Justin Ryncavage, a junior from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., set the school record in winning the javelin at the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival and is the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for April 24-30, 2006. Ryncavage threw the javelin 241 feet, 3 inches (73.55 meters). His effort topped the old standard of 240-8 set by Sean Murray in 1992. Ryncavage currently ranks third in the nation in the event.

Laura Gerraughty became just the fifth woman in the 112-year history of the Penn Relays to win the same event four times with her triumph in the shot put Thursday. In addition to winning the shot put, Gerraughty also returned the next day to win the discus. Gerraughty currently ranks No. 1 in the nation in the shot and No. 11 in the discus.

BENJI JOHNSON

Sophomore Benji Johnson led the Tar Heels to an unbeaten week with team highs of four home runs and eight RBI, as well as a .471 average (8-17). With 20 total bases on the week, Johnson slugged 1.176 and notched a .550 on-base percentage to lead Carolina.

After capping Wednesday's win over High Point with a pinch-hit three-run home run in the eighth inning, Johnson homered twice and matched a career high with three RBI for the second straight game in the series opener at Duke. Johnson had two more hits Saturday and followed with two hits and his fourth home run over a four-game span in the series finale Sunday. Against the Blue Devils, Johnson went 6-for-12 with three homers and five RBI.

On the year, Johnson leads the Tar Heels and is tied for fifth in the ACC with 10 home runs. He is batting .299 on the year with a career-high 29 RBI. Johnson has hit safely in five straight games and can match his career-best hitting streak May 9 against Campbell.
