Three More Tar Heels Advance at NCAA Track Championships
June 10, 2005 Sheena Gordon, Vikas Gowda and Erin Donohue easily advanced to event finals on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. Those three Tar Heels will each compete again on Saturday, the final day of competition. Gordon advanced in the women's high jump by clearing 5-10 3/4 on her first attempt. After passing on the first height of the event, Gordon had three straight successful jumps before the preliminaries were stopped. Fifteen student-athletes cleared 5-10 3/4 to advance to Saturday's final. Other notables in the field include ACC rivals Debra Vento of Duke and Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech, the defending NCAA champion. Gowda had the top mark in the preliminary round of the men's discus. After hitting a distance of 196-10 on his first throw, Gowda passed on his other two attempts. Florida State's Garrett Johnson, who defeated Gowda at the East Regional meet last weekend, was 13th in prelims and failed to advance. Donohue won her heat of the women's 1500-meter run in a time of 4:17.53. She will be one of 12 student-athletes in Saturday's final, which will include national leader Anne Shadle of Nebraska and conference rival Shannon Rowbury of Duke, among others. The only other Tar Heel in action Thursday was Tatyana Kirichenko. Despite clearing a season-best height of 13-1 1/2, she did not advance to the finals, finishing in a tie for 18th. Day three at the NCAA Championships begins at 3 p.m. EDT Friday with the women's discus final. Live results can be found at the NCAA website.
