SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Brie Felnagle ran a blistering 4 minutes, 9.93 seconds to claim the title in the women's 1,500 meters Saturday at the NCAA Championships at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State. With her time, Felnagle set a new school record in the event, bettering the 4:11.60 Shalane Flanagan ran in 2003, and also recorded the fastest clocking in the nation this year.

Florida State's Susan Kuijken (4:11.34) and Stanford's Arianna Lambie (4:12.29) finished second and third, respectively. The UNC sophomore from Tacoma, Wash., trailed Lambie entering the final 400 meters when she started her move, overtaking the Stanford senior on the back stretch and then distancing herself further from the field with a strong finishing kick for the win.

It was a fitting end to an amazing year for Felnagle, who prior to this weekend had already been part of a national championship and American Record-setting performance in the distance medley relay during the indoor season. In addition, Felnagle earned All-America honors in both cross country and the indoor 3,000 meters this school year, joining Flanagan as the only women in school history to compile the honors in all three sports during the same school year.

Felnagle's victory gave UNC ten points in the team standings, helping the Tar Heels to a tie for 21st place. The Tar Heel men had no competitors in action Saturday, but their 26-point total landed them sixth overall in the team standings, their best showing since finishing fourth in 1996.
