Three More Tar Heels Advance At NCAA Championships
June 8, 2006 SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Justin Ryncavage, Laura Gerraughty and Megan Kaltenbach advanced to finals with strong performances on day two of the NCAA Track and Field Championships Thursday at Hornet Stadium. Georgia Kloss, Vikas Gowda and Adam Montague also competed, but did not move on in their events. Ryncavage broke his own school record in the javelin on his second throw of the day. The Wilkes-Barre, Pa., junior just missed an ACC record with a mark of 243 feet, 3 inches (74.14 meters), the longest throw of the day for any competitor. The 12 finalists will compete again Saturday at 10 a.m. PDT. Gerraughty needed just one throw to top the field in the shot put prelims. After her effort of 59-5 3/4 (18.13m), the Nashua, N.H., senior passed on her other two attempts. The finals will be held Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m. PDT. Kaltenbach ran a new personal best in advancing to the finals of the 1,500-meter run. Her time of 4:18.87 was good for fourth in heat two and was the eighth-fastest of the day. Twelve runners advanced to Saturday's final at 1:52 p.m. PDT. Kloss finished eighth in her heat of the 800 in 2:08.05 and failed to advance to the final. Gowda, who will compete in the discus final Friday, finished 13th in the shot put with a mark of 59-8 1/2. Montague, a freshman competing in his first NCAA meet, fouled on his three attempts in the javelin. Finals were contested in the men's and women's long jump, the men's and women's 10,000 meters and the men's decathlon Thursday. Through three events, Arkansas and Wisconsin share the men's lead with 14 points. On the women's side, Arizona State leads through two events with 15 points.
