Ryncavage Repeats As National Champion In Javelin, Montague Runner-Up
June 8, 2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Justin Ryncavage capped his illustrious career at North Carolina with a second straight title in the javelin at the NCAA Championships Friday at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State. Teammate Adam Montague helped the Tar Heels sweep the top two spots in the event, finishing second in a dominating performance for the No. 9 UNC men. Ryncavage threw a season-best 241 feet, 5 inches (73.58 meters) on his first attempt to best the field in claiming the victory, becoming just the sixth man in UNC track and field history to win two national championships - and the first one to do it in the exact same event. Montague, a sophomore from Townsville, Australia, posted a mark of 236-1 (71.96m) in his runner-up performance, recording the throw on his fifth of sixth attempts. Aris Borjas of Cal Poly finished third with a 234-4 throw. Ryncavage won his first career javelin crown last year with a school-record mark of 243-4 (74.18m). This time the Wilkes-Barre, Pa., senior posted the second best throw in the nation this year - behind Montague's toss at the East Regional - in taking the championship. The Tar Heels scored an 18-point haul in the event, putting them in fourth place in the team standings through 13 events with a 26-point total. Brie Felnagle will compete for the UNC women in the finals of the 1,500 meters Saturday at a scheduled 2:22 p.m. ET start. Action from the NCAA Championships will be broadcast on CBS from 1-3 p.m. ET.
