Ivy, Cox Perform Well In Tar Heel Aggie Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina Tar Heels posted solid performances in the Tar Heel Aggie Classic, a split meet hosted by North Carolina A&T and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Sunday. The Tar Heels hosted the distance carnival and field events at Fetzer Field, Belk Track and Finley Fields. The Aggies hosted the majority of the running events at Irwin Belk Track on a rainy Sunday across the state. The Tar Heel women participated in a variety of running events at Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, NC. Freshmen Malia Walked turned in times of 11.82 and 24.20 in the women's 1000-meter dash and 200-meter dash respectively. Freshmen Cierra McGee also performed well in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.52 placing third in the event. Sophomore Christine Johnson placed second in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 55.57, a second shy of a regional mark. Senior Shaunee Morgan turned in a solid performance in the 400-meter dash placing third with a time of 56.17. In the women's 100-meter hurdles junior Vanneisha Ivy registered a regional mark with a time of 13.23 finishing first in the event. In the women's 400-meter hurdles sophomore LaToya James placed seventh with a time of 1:08.19. In the women's high jump, two Tar Heel women performed well. Sophomore Patience Coleman placed first with 5-05.75 finish. Junior Alexandra Coppadge turned in a fourth place finish in the same event at 4-11.75. In the women's long jump three freshmen women participated. Tyler Ford placed fourth (18-09.00), Danielle Brock fifth (18-0.75) and Jacinda Evans ninth (17-10.25).
Four women performed in the women's 800-meter run posting excellent results. Freshmen Ashley Verplank placed first with a regional mark time of 2:07.28. Tasha Stanley placed second, junior Callie Pottinger third and sophomore Dominque Jackson seventh. In the women's shot put senior Morgan Stengel placed fourth with a throw of 18-6.00. In the women's pole vault junior Abby Kimball placed fifth with a throw of 12-01.50. In the men's 400-meter dash sophomore Charles Cox finished first with a time of 47.60, only four-tenths of a second shy of achieving a regional mark. Senior Ryan Booker placed fourth with a time of 48.80 at Irwin Belk Track. In the men's 400-meter hurdles senior Brian Barrett placed second with a time of 54.91. In the men's long jump sophomore Austin Davis finished fourth with a jump of 23-00.75. Junior Edward Baldwin III finished sixth with a jump of 22-04.25 in the same event. In the men's 800-meter run sophomores Andrew Rotz and Adam Cunningham finished seventh and twelfth respectively. In the men's 1500-meter run senior Jeremy Cramer posted a eleventh place finish at 3:57.42. In the men's pole vault sophomore Parker Smith and freshmen Scott Houston finished with heights of 17-00.75 and 16-06.75 respectively good enough for two regional marks. Senior Daniel Keller performed in three field events Sunday, posting a second place finish in the javelin throw with 171-02 points. The Tar Heel men and women will return to action in May 29 at the NCAA Regional Championships in Greensboro, NC. |
