May 12, 2006
ATLANTA --- Vikas Gowda broke his own school record in the shot put to lead the University of North Carolina track and field teams Friday night at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Gowda's mark of 64 feet, 4 1/2 inches (19.62 meters) is now the sixth-best mark in the nation this year. Cassie King and Justin Ryncavage were also individual event winners, while Pablo Durana, Britt Taylor and Laura Gerraughty had runner-up performances. King triumphed in the steeplechase with a time of 10:19.40. That time is the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season and moves her into the top 15 in the nation. Ryncavage cruised to a win in the javelin throw. His top effort of 238-1 (72.56m) easily bested the field. Teammate Adam Montague was third with a throw of 211-2 (64.36m). Durana had a season-best time in the 1,500-meter run, but just missed a regional qualifying mark. His time of 3:48.04 was just .05 seconds out of first and .24 seconds off the regional standard. Taylor jumped 23-11 (7.29m) to finish just behind Wake Forest's Kevin Marion (24-3 1/2). Gerraughty, the NCAA leader in the shot put, was the top collegiate finisher with a heave of 59-2 1/4 (18.04m). Members of the UNC team also competed in the Aggie Invitational at NC A&T.
