May 11, 2002 The North Carolina track teams competed in their last home meet of the season at the UNC Last Chance held at Fetzer Field Saturday afternoon. Carolina athletes reached NCAA qualifying marks 12 times during the event and two new school records were set, as well. Junior Rebecca Post set a new UNC record in the pole vault with a first-place vault of 12-6, which is an NCAA provisional mark. Freshman Laura Gerraughty set a school record in winning the shot put with a distance of 57-5, an NCAA automatic mark. Gerraughty also surpassed the provisional mark in the shot put at 192-1 and was joined by fellow freshmen Ibiene Bilaye-Benibo at 188-5, also a provisional distance. Tar Heel freshman Erin Donohue and Carol Henry each met provisional marks in the 1500-meter run at 4:21.84 and 4:23.32, respectively. Sophomore Tiffany Flomo ran a 58.79 to take second in the 400-meter hurdles and provisionally qualify, and the UNC 4x400 meter team ran 3:37.24 to provisionally qualify. On the men's side, senior Brent Callaway vaulted a season-high 17-5 1/2 in winning the pole vault to pass the provisional mark, and senior Blair Woodward also won the long jump with a provisional distance of 25-3 1/2. Senior thrower Ian Douglas provisionally qualified in the shot put with a first-place distance of 60-6 3/4. Senior Sal Gigante also passed the provisional mark with a hammer throw of 203-11 to win his event.
Former Tar Heel Joan Mabe set a new national Master's division record in the women's 1500-meter run by finishing in a time of 4:32.73. Mabe, formerly Joan Nesbit, beat the old record by set by Carol McLatchie in 1993 by six seconds.
The Tar Heels are back in action next week at the Reebok Invitational in Atlanta and then prepare for the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held May 29-June 1 in Baton Rouge, La.
