Several Tar Heels Earn Regional Marks

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Brie Felnagle and several other Tar Heels turned in regional qualifying efforts on Friday as Carolina hosted the Taylor Cattle Farms Carolina Classic. Felnagle clocked a 2:04.71 to take the top spot. LaToya James and Colleen Farley both earned regional marks in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday.

A pair of Tar Heels were in action in the 100-meter dash with Tyra Johnson finishing fourth in a time of 11.96, while Shardae Anderson finished eighth with a time of 12:17. Meanwhile in the 200, Ashley Hill finished sixth with a race of 24.37 and Anderson pulled double duty finishing ninth crossing the line in 24.47. Callie Pottinger and Christine Johnson continued to do what they have done all season long finishing back-to-back in the 400-meter dash. Pottinger got the best of Johnson on Friday with a time of 56.09, while Johnson finished eighth in 56.36.

Brie Felnagle was back in action on Friday and turned in the fourth-fastest time in the 800-meter run as she cruised to the victory in a competitive field that featured three regional qualifying times. The multi-duo of Alexandra Coppadge and Gabby Gioia competed in the 100-meter hurdles as Coppadge finished in 14.59 for eighth place while Gioia placed 11th in 15.07. LaToya James picked up another win in the 400-meter hurdles as she clocked the sixth-fastest time in the country at 57.48. Also joining in the regional qualifying marks was Colleen Farley who finished fifth in 1:00.66. Porscha Dobson and Coppadge also competed in the 400-hurdles and finished eighth (1:02.80) and 11th (1:04.41) respectively.

 

 

Morgan Stengel picked up her first regional mark of the outdoor season with a victory in the 3000-meter steeplechase as she finished the course in 10:47.66 to win by more than 15 seconds. Ashley Haislip cleared 5-5 in the high jump to claim the Carolina Classic title. Hill, Gioia and Coppadge all competed in the long jump finishing 6-7-8 with marks of 18-1.5, 17-11.75 and 17-11.5. Gioia had a busy day as she also competed in the triple jump and fell just shy of a regional mark as she finished second with a top jump of 39-1.25.

In the throws events, Mary Angell finished second in the shot put but was able to come up with a regional mark as she tallied a mark of 47-00.75. Angell finished second in the discus as well and came up with her second regional mark in as many events with a throw of 160-04. Fellow Tar Heel Jocelyn White came up with the victory in the discus as she cleared 169-05. Norjai Palma placed third in the hammer throw as she tossed the hammer 150-04. Gioia and Coppadge were not done yet as Gioia finished second in the javelin (125-01) and Coppadge took seventh (99-09).

On the men's side, Bremen DeHaan finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.14 to pick up another regional mark. Donte Nall picked up another regional mark with a jump of 6-10.75 to pick up the win, while Matthew Villemain finished third as he cleared 6-6.75. Parker Smith picked up another regional mark for Carolina as he cleared 16-6.75 in the pole vault. Edward Baldwin III and Austin Davis finished 1-2 in the long jump as the duo fell just three inches shy of regional marks. Baldwin posted a mark of 23-9.50 just beating Davis' leap of 23-9. Davis also competed in the triple jump and took the win with a jump of 48-5.5. Ian Reynolds finished third in the shot put with a throw of 56-2.5 to earn another regional qualifying mark. Freshman Emory Parsons finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 155-4. Brian Moore took the top spot in the javelin throw with a top throw of 194-3, while Brian Doran finished sixth with a toss of 158-4.
