April 14, 2007
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Brie Felnagle and Georgia Kloss both posted top-10 times in the nation this year in finishing 1-2 in the women's 800 meters, and the North Carolina men's and women's track teams totaled eight individual titles on the day as UNC hosted the Carolina Fast Times meet Saturday at Irwin Belk Track and Fetzer Field. The meet marked the last tune-up before the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships start next week. Felnagle claimed the title in the 800 - in her first outdoor action of the year - with a blitzing 2:04.63 time, fifth-best in school history. Right behind her was Kloss, who crossed the line in 2:06.49. Both women automatically qualify for the NCAA regional with their times, which rank fourth- and seventh-best in the country so far this year. Also standing out for the UNC women was Shardae Anderson, who won the 100 meter dash and gained a regional qualifying time of her own with a new personal-best 11.65 clocking. Judith Bataille earned a top-five finish as well in the event, placing third in 12 seconds flat. Kimberly Warren picked up an event win in the shot put - as well as a regional qualifying mark - with her 47-2 1/4 heave, a new personal best. UNC teammate Norjai Palma threw 43-10 1/2 to place third. The Carolina women had a strong showing in the discus as well, sweeping the top three positions. Jocelyn White led the way with a 171-8 toss, while Riana Lynn (158-0) and Warren (142-5) finished second and third, respectively. Both White and Lynn's tosses met the regional qualifying standard.
White joined Warrren with two top-five finishes in the throws as her 154-3 effort in the hammer throw earned her fourth place in the event. Colleen Farley and Rhian Jenks also picked up event wins for the UNC women. Farley claimed the 400-meter hurdles title in 1:01.87 while Jenks gave Carolina another field winner, taking the pole vault with a 12-5 1/2, matching her season best. Tyra Johnson ran a 24.15 and La'Shonda Carter clocked a 24.49 as they finished second and fourth, respectively in the women's 200 meters. Carter tacked on a second-place showing in the long jump, leaping 18-10 to collect two top-five finishes on the day for the Tar Heels. The UNC women also picked up an event win in the 4x100-meter relay, crossing the line in 45.67, qualifying for the NCAA regional in the process. Also of note for the Carolina women was Vanneisa Ivy's runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles. She ran a 13.99 to finish behind Hampton's Yvette Lewis. Laura Cummings and Philipa Davies rounded out UNC's top-five finishers on the women's side. Cummings placed fourth in the 1,500 meters with a 4:40.51 time, while Davies threw 119-2 in the javelin to finish in fourth position. Reggie Berry led the No. 17 UNC men with an event crown in the 400-meter hurdles. Berry clocked a 51.97 to outpace the competition, automatically qualifying for the NCAA regional in the process. Daniel Keller was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 15-7 on the day, and Britt Taylor's 22-11 3/4 effort in the long jump earned him fifth place. Also standing out for the Tar Heel men were two top-five finishers in the men's 800 meters. Ryan Shaver's 1:52.45 put him fourth overall, and Cody Harper finished right behind him in 1:53.44. Carolina next travels to College Park, Md., for the ACC Outdoor Championships, which run April 19-21. |
