Nall Doubles Up On Senior Day At Tony Waldrop Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina hosted the Tony Waldrop Invitational over the weekend and turned in numerous regional qualifying times in preparation for the ACC Outdoor Championships next week at Georgia Tech. Donte Nall doubled up with regional marks as he took the top spot in the high jump, while placing second in the triple jump. Brie Felnagle was back in action for the Tar Heels and immediately set a regional mark in the 800-meter run, winning the event handily. The Tar Heels will head to Atlanta in search of ACC titles next weekend, the Championships are set to run Thursday-Saturday. A pair of Johnson's finished 1-2 in the 200-meter dash with Tyra Johnson claiming the top spot in 24.25 just ahead of Christine Johnson who clocked in at 24.49. Ashley Hill was not far behind as she placed fourth (25.05). Alexandra Coppadge placed 15th in the 200 with a time of 25.90, while fellow multi-athlete Gabby Gioia finished 28th (27.54). Dominque Jackson took home second in the 400-meter dash as she clocked in with a time of 56.01, just ahead of Callie Pottinger who finished third (56.61) and Shardae Anderson who finished fourth (56.95).
Brie Felnagle took part in her first meet of the outdoor season and immediately set a regional qualifying mark with a time of 2:06.95 in the 800-meter run. Megan Kaltenbach nearly did the same in the 1500-meter run as she claimed the top spot in 4:32.36.
The Tar Heel hurdlers were back to their regional qualifying ways on Saturday as LaToya James took the spot ahead of teammate Vanneisha Ivy. James finished in 13.87, while Ivy was right behind her in 13.88. Gabby Gioia and Alexandra Coppadge also posted top 15 performances for Carolina. Fellow hurdler Porscha Dobson enjoyed her senior day as she earned a 400-meter hurdle regional mark with a first place finish in 1:00.39. Fellow senior Colleen Farley also earned a regional mark with a time of 1:00.56. Ivy fell just short of doubling up on regional marks for the day but still took third (1:01.73). The Carolina 4x400 meter relay team fell just shy of a regional mark as the quartet clocked in at 3:42.56, just over the regional time of 3:42.00. The Tar Heels still claimed the top spot by more than seven seconds. Joining the regional party was Patience Coleman who cleared 5-8.75 for the top spot in the high jump. Ashley Haislip took home third in the event as she tallied a mark of 5-7. Erika Foushee finished third in the long jump with a mark of 18-06.50, just ahead of Alexandra Coppadge's jump of 18-05.25, Ashley Hill's mark of 18-03.75 and LaToya James' leap of 17-11.75. The group finished third, fourth, sixth and seventh respectively. Gabby Gioia finished second in the triple jump when she cleared 39-08.00, as the freshman fell just shy of the regional mark. Foushee made it two top five finishes as she finished fifth in the triple jump (35-10.00). Dejanell Mittman placed right behind Foushee with a sixth place showing as she cleared 35-7.75, after placing 17th in the long jump. Kimberly Warren took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 44-9.75. Jocelyn White tallied another regional qualifying mark in the discus throw as she recorded a mark of 162-5 to win the event. Gioia claimed the top spot in the javelin throw as she recorded a throw of 122-11. In men's action, Bremen de Haan finished 18th with a time of 22.66 in the 200-meter dash. Ryan Booker posted a second place finish in the 400-meter dash, ahead of teammates Ian Williamson (third, 48.50), Andrew Rotz (20th, 50.24) and Adam Smith (22nd, 50.58). John Curtiss was the top finisher for Carolina in the 800 as he crossed the line in 1:54.99 for seventh, while Adam Cunningham placed 15th (1:56.56). Nick Krouse finished fifth in the 1500-meter run as he crossed the line in 3:59.04, while Sam Pompei placed 16th with a time of 4:03.78. Ian Bracy and Matt Hamrick also claimed top 25 finishes. Stephen Bloemeke also claimed a top five finish for Carolina in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:51.18. De Haan fell just shy of a regional mark in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.91. Reggie Berry placed fifth on the day in the 400-meter hurdles as he clocked in at 53.09. Brian Barrett finished 20th in the race with a time of 57.27. The men's 4x400 meter relay team met a similar fate of the women's team as they finished second in a time of 3:10.12, a touch over the regional mark of 3:10.00. Donte Nall equaled his best mark of his career as he cleared 7-2.50 for the second time this season to claim first place in the high jump. Travis Leonard registered a 13th place finish as he cleared 6-00.75. Parker Smith picked up another victory for Carolina as he took the top spot in the pole vault as Smith cleared 15-07.00. Multi-athlete Matt Villemain took home ninth place as he cleared 13-07.25. Edward Baldwin III picked up another regional mark for the Heels in the long jump as he cleared 24-04.50 to finish second in the event. Austin Davis fell three quarters of an inch shy of a regional mark in the long jump as he placed right behind Baldwin in third with a jump of 24-00.25. Villeamin added a third top 15 finisher, as he placed 11th (19-6). Nall picked up his second regional mark of the day in the triple jump as he cleared 49-5.50 for a second place finish and a personal-best in the open division, while teammate Austin Davis claimed the top spot in the invitational with a regional mark of 50-8.75. Ian Reynolds finished first in the shot put on his senior day with a winning toss of 52-7.25, while freshmen Walter Henning finished third with a throw of 51-7 and Kyle Goodman came in sixth (47-8). Brian Doran kept the freshman theme going with a third place showing in the javelin throw as he tossed the javelin 167-5. The Tar Heels will be looking for ACC Tournament titles next weekend when they travel to Atlanta for the ACC Outdoor Championships held on the campus of Georgia Tech University. |
