UNC's Laura Gerraughty continued her stellar freshman season by setting a UNC record in the hammer and hitting NCAA qualifying marks in the hammer, shot put and discus at the UNC Invitational Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Gerraughty's second-place distance of 191-6 in the hammer bests her old Carolina record and is an NCAA provisional distance. Her first-place mark of 55-11 in the shot put is an NCAA automatic mark and her 167-6 in the discus is an NCAA provisional distance.

Fellow thrower Ibiene Bilaye-Benibo met NCAA provisional marks in the shot put (49-11 3/4) and the hammer (188-0).

Also reaching an NCAA provisional mark was Edi Ntuen, who ran a 53.65 to take first place in the 400-meter dash.

Tar Heel women winning their respective running events were Ntuen in 400m, Anissa Gainey at 11.84 in the 100m, Lindsay Bond with a time of 13.96 in the 100-meter hurdles and Tiffany Flomo at 1:00.03 in the 400-meter hurdles.

For the Tar Heel women in the field events, Tatyana Kirichenko won the high jump at a height of 5-3 3/4, Amy Parulis placed first in the javelin at 135-2, Phabienne Parker took first in the triple jump with a distance of 37-2 1/2, and Gerraughty won the shot put and discus.

For the Carolina men, Aaron Jackson won the 100-meter dash at 10.97, Hunter Graham placed first in the 800m at 1:53.73 and Kevin Watson took first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.87.

 

 

Blair Woodward placed first in the long jump at 24-1 and second in the triple jump with a mark of 48-0. Teammate Mark Curry won the triple jump at 48-4 3/4.

Sal Gigante won both the discus (171-1) and the hammer (196-10), while Ian Douglas won the shot put (58-1 3/4) and placed second in the discus (164-1).

Brent Callaway also won the pole vault at a height of 16-10 3/4.

The Tar Heels are back in action next weekend at the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
