Three Tar Heels Meet NCAA Provisional Marks At The Duke Invitational

UNC wrapped up action at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., Saturday afternoon with three athletes earning NCAA provisional marks for their efforts.

Adam Shunk cleared an NCAA provisional height of 7-03 to take first place in the high jump, while Alice Schmidt and Liz Awtrey met provisional marks in the 800-meter run and 3000-meter steeplechase, as well. Schmidt placed seventh in the 800m at 2:07.44, and Awtrey ran a 10:35.12 in the 3000m steeplechase to finish fourth.

Erin Donohue continued her impressive freshman campaign with a third-place time of 4:24.98 in the 1500m after placing fifth in the javelin on Friday.

Also for the Tar Heel women, Edi Ntuen placed fourth in the 400m at 54.08, and Tiffany Flomo ran 59.45 to finish fourth in the 400m high hurdles. Lindsay Bond took fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.30.

UNC's female relay teams were also successful with the 4x400 team wining the event at 3:41.70 and the 4x100 team placing third at 46.52.

Vikas Gowda earned two fourth-place finishes for Carolina's men's team by throwing 54-0 1/2 in the shot put and 163-03 in the discus.

John Hubbard placed second behind teammate Shunk in the high jump at 6-09 3/4.

Also for the UNC men, Hunter Graham ran a 4:01.66 to finish fourth in the 1500-meter developmental run, and Aaron Jackson placed seventh in the 400m hurdles at 55.79.

Blair Woodward jumped 23-3 1/4 in the long jump to finish sixth after placing fourth in the triple jump Friday night with a distance of 46-09.

 

 

Some of Carolina's highlights from Friday's first day of competition included Shalane Flanagan and Carol Henry taking first and second in the women's 3000-meter run. Flanagan ran a 9:13.51, which is only one second off the all-time UNC 3000-meter record, and was followed by Henry at 9:18.33.

Also on Friday UNC's women's DMR team took second with a time of 11:42.03, Shannon Burns placed fourth in the triple jump at 40-08 1/4, and Lindsay Bond placed fourth in the 200-meter developmental run with a time of 25.51.

Matt Daly ran an 8:43.78 in the 3000-meter run on Friday to finish fourth.
