CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The North Carolina women's track and field team is in fourth place through six events and the men's team is in second place through four events at the first day of competition at the 2003 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Tar Heels have won two events on the women's side, and one event on the men's side of the competition.

On the women's side, Georgia Tech leads with 39.5 points, followed by Virginia (37.5), Florida State (36), North Carolina (35.5), Wake Forest (23), NC State (19), Maryland (19), Duke (15.5) and Clemson (9). On the women's side, Florida State has taken the lead with 45 points, followed by North Carolina (29), Georgia Tech (23), NC State (21), Clemson (12), Duke (8), Wake Forest (8), Virginia (7) and Maryland (3).

For the Carolina men, senior Blair Woodward successfully defended his title in the long jump, hitting a mark of 24-8 1/2. Junior Daniel Harris and senior Adam Shunk also earned points for the Tar Heels in that event, with Harris finishing third and Shunk finishing seventh.

In the other men's field events held Friday, sophomore Vikas Gowda finished third in the shot put with a mark of 57-0. On the track, the Carolina distance medley relay team of freshman Pablo Durana, and sophomores Johnny Jay, Hunter Graham and Brian McGovern finished fourth with a time of 10:01.33.

Sophomores Kevin Watson (8.01) and Rob Bates (8.15) advanced to the finals by winning their individual heats and finishing first and third overall in the 60-meter hurdles. Also advancing to the finals for the Tar Heels are freshman Ryan Therrien (400-meter), freshman Curtis Fraser (60-meter), junior Andrew Craycraft (800-meter) and sophomore Doug Smith (800-meter).

 

 

On the women's side, freshman Laura Gerraughty won her first ACC Indoor championship while setting a new conference meet record with a throw of 57-9 in the shot put. Also, in the distance medley relay, North Carolina's team of sophomores Carol Henry and Jennifer Nelms, and juniors Alice Schmidt and Shalane Flanagan took first place with an Eddie Smith Fieldhouse/Dick Taylor track record time of 11:36.20.

Sophomores Tatyana Kirichenko and Jennifer Nelms and junior Kiera Underwood each placed in the high jump all clearing a mark of 5-5 3/4, Based on fewer missies, Kirichenko finished fourth, Nelms finished sixth and Underwood finished seventh.

In preliminary action, junior Shalane Flanagan and sophomore Erin Donohue each advanced to tomorrow's finals in the mile run. In the 800-meter three Tar Heels - senior Bobbie Jo Munson, Schmidt and Donohue - advanced to the finals in the 800. Also advancing to the finals were sophomore Lindsay Bond (60-meter hurdles), junior Anissa Gainey (60 and 200-meter), junior Tiffany Flomo (200 and 400-meter) and senior Kameese Wright (400-meter).
