Sossah And Keller Reach Provisional Mark In Heptathlon

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina wrapped up day two of the Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic on Saturday and picked up a pair of provisional marks from multi athletes Mateo Sossah and Daniel Keller as the pair reached the provisional mark in the heptathlon. Freshman Patience Coleman equaled her provisional mark from a week ago as she cleared 5-10 in the high jump once again. Sossah and Keller finished the day with a bang as the duo finished in the top four of the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and the 1000. Sossah took the top spot in the heptathlon with 5,546 points as he finished first in the 60-meter hurdles, second in the pole vault and first in the 1,000 on Saturday. Keller shot to the top as he dominated the pole vault and finished the event with 5,329 points which also gives him an NCAA provisional mark. In men's track action, Kelvin Hardesty finished 15th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.09 as Clemson's C.J. Spiller broke a three-year facility record as he finished with a time of 6.58. Fellow freshman Charles Cox turned in another top three finish as he took third in the 200 when he crossed the line in 21.93 less than .20 seconds out of first place.
Three Tar Heels turned in top 10 finishes in the mile run with Adam Cunningham coming in sixth (4:20.87), Zack Dawson taking eighth (4:21.70) and Sam Pompei taking 10th (4:23.17). Matt Hamrick was not far off the pack as he crossed the line in 4:24.68 for 15th in the race. Andrew Rotz and John Curtiss followed with a pair of top 10 finishes in the 800 with Rotz taking fourth (1:55.65) and Curtiss (1:56.40) less than a second behind for seventh. In the 3000, Nick Hutchins finished 19th as he finished the race in 8:56.94. In the 4x400 meter relay Carolina took home second place as the group raced around the track in 3:17.67.
Donte Nall took second in the high jump as he cleared 6-9.75 after making a provisional mark a week ago. Turning in another top four finish in the long jump was Austin Davis as he landed 23-2.75 from the line. Ian Reynolds tossed the shot put 53-7 to finish fifth in the shot put invitational as fellow shot putter Kyle Goodman finished 12th in the open shot with a throw of 44-4. On the women's side, Patience Coleman equaled her best leap of the year in the high jump as she cleared 5-10 for the second week in a row to claim the women's high jump. Not far behind was Ashley Haislip who finished third as she cleared 5-6. In the pole vault, Alison McGinnis finished seventh as she jumped 11-1.75. The Tar Heels dominated the shot put invitational with Kimberly Warren taking the top spot with a toss of 45-4.25. Jocelyn White (45-1) and Norjai Palma (44-3.5) were not far behind as they finished second and fifth, respectively. Carolina took the top spot in the 4x400 relay to wrap up the weekend's events as they won by almost three seconds with a time of 3:49.44. A pair of Tar Heel women qualified for the 60-meter dash final with Tyra Johnson taking eighth with a time of 7.52 and Shardae Anderson finishing 13th with a time of 7.78. Anderson turned in a time of 25.32 for 13th in the 200 as well as her teammates Christine Johnson (25.23) and Ashley Hill (25.69) finished eighth and 17th, respectively. The duo of Kristy Longman and Taylor Parkes both turned in top 10 performances in the 800 with Longman taking sixth as she crossed the line in 2:17.32 and Parkes who finished eighth in a time of 2:19.57. The Tar Heels will return to action next week when they head to New York, N.Y. for the New Balance Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8 & 9. |
