Carolina Women's Track Takes First at Tar Heel Elite

The UNC women's indoor track team finished first at the Tar Heel Elite track meet held in the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse Friday and Saturday. UNC totaled 115 points to take the women's division with Georgia only one point behind at 114 and Miami in third with 83 points. Georgia Tech took the men's side with 112 points. The Tar Heels followed with 96.5, and Georgia was third with 93.5.

UNC's Shalane Flanagan ran 9:17.41 to win the women's 3000m and automatically qualify for Indoor NCAA's. Teammate Alice Schmidt won the 800m in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:08.96.

Carolina's Ibe Bilaye-Benibo and Shannon Burns also reached NCAA provisional marks. Bilaye-Benibo placed first in the shot put with a throw of 49-4 1/2, while Burns finished third in the triple jump at 42-3 1/4.

Tar Heel Erin Donohue won the women's mile at 4:56.10, and Carol Henry placed second in the 3000m with a time of 9:24.59.

For Carolina on the men's side, Ian Douglas finished first in the shot put at 59-5 1/2 and third in the weight throw with a toss of 57-7. Douglas' shot put mark is an NCAA provisional mark.

Zach Victor won the men's mile with a time of 4:16.74, and Hunter Graham placed third in the mile at 4:24.41. Brent Callaway finished third in the pole vault at 16-0 3/4.

Joey Handy placed third in the men's 200m with a time of 22.32, and also finished fifth in the 400m at 49.26.

In Friday's action, Tar Heel junior Adam Shunk qualified for NCAAs in the high jump at 7-4 1/2, and Bilaye-Benibo broke the UNC school record in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 54-7 1/4.

The Tar Heels are back in action Jan. 25-26 hosting the Blue Heaven Rumble in Chapel Hill.
