Eight Swimmers & Divers Sign Letters of Intent

Newcomers include four men, four women.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving coach Frank Comfort announced on Tuesday the signing of eight outstanding student-athletes to national letters of intent. This group includes four men (three swimmers and one diver) and four women (three swimmers and one diver). Seven of the eight prospective student-athletes will enroll in August 1999.

One, Molly Freedman, will not enroll until August 2000 after training an additional year with her club coach in an effort to make the 2000 United States Olympic Team.

The women's group includes Molly Freedman of Washington, D.C., Jenny Goodman of Cary, N.C., Leigh Sanders of Morgantown, W.Va., and Christy Watkins of Winter Springs, Fla. The mens group includes Judd Glasco of Richmond, Va., Stephen Krebs of Annandale, Va., Stephen Mohr of Mequon, Wis., and Sean Quinn of Lancaster, S.C.

Following is more complete biographical information on the eight student-athletes:

The Men

Judd Glasco, Richmond, Va. - Swims for NOVA Aquatics. Glasco is a member of the current U.S. Swimming National Junior Team. His career best times include 4:31.38 in the 500-yard freestyle, 9:18.72 in 1000-yard freestyle, 15:27.82 in the 1650-yard freestyle, 1:50.51 in the 200-yard backstroke and 3:59.03 in the 400-yard individual medley.

Stephen Krebs, Annandale, Va.- Virginia state U.S. Diving one-meter champion. High school All-America as a junior in high school.

Stephen Mohr, Mequon, Wis.- Attends Homestead High School where he is ranked #1 in a senior class of 360 students. Career best times are 4:32.22 in the 500-yard freestyle, 9:20.43 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 15:41.47 in the 1650-yard freestyle and 4:01.01 in the 400-yard individual medley.

Sean Quinn, Lancaster, S.C.- Swims for Mecklenburg Aquatic Club in Charlotte, N.C. Quinn is a current member of the U.S. Swimming National Junior Team. He won the summer 1998 junior national championship in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:18.67. He also swims the individual medley. Other current Tar Heel swimmers who have swum for the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club include Andrew Biedrzycki, Jennie Gardner, Katie Hathaway, Ilana Kavadlo and Brad Kline.

The Women

Molly Freedman, Washington, D.C.-Freedman, a senior at the Sidwell Friends School, is a native of Washington, D.C. She will enroll at UNC in August 2000 after training for one year with her club coach, Rick Curl, at the Curl-Burke Swim Club in Suburban Washington, D.C. Molly was the 1998 U.S. Swimming Summer Senior National Champion in the 200-meter butterfly. In addition to being one of the world's greatest butterfliers, Freedman is also an outstanding middle distance freestyler, 200-meter breaststroker and individual medley swimmer. Other current Tar Heel swimmers who swam for Curl-Burke Swim Club are sophomore Seth Laughlin and womens senior tri-captain Tracey Rankin.

Jenny Goodman, Cary, N.C.- A senior at Cary High School, she finished third in one-meter diving as a junior in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association meet.

Leigh Sanders, Morgantown, W.Va.- Swims for Mountaineer Aquatic Club. Career best times are 4:54.13 in the 500-yard freestyle, 9:54.03 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 16:34.00 in the 1650-yard freestyle and 4:22.00 in the 400-yard individual medley.

Christy Watkins, Winter Springs, Fla.- Attends Trinity Prep and swims for the Trinity Aquatic Team coached by U.S. Olympian Mitch Ivey. A versatile swimmer, she set the national independent high school record in the 100-yard backstroke as a junior with a time of 54.69. This fall, she won the 100-yard backstroke at the Florida state high school meet in 55.43 despite an injury-marred fall training season. Other career bests include a 55.60 in the 100-yard butterfly, 2:02.57 in the 200-yard individual medley, 23.72 in the 50-yard freestyle and 51.13 in the 100-yard freestyle. She originally qualified for U.S. Swimming nationals as a breaststroker. Other current Tar Heel swimmers who also competed for Trinity Aquatic Team are Randy Thorpe and womens team tri-captain Kelsey Durkin.
