Kinderwater & Kane Honored As ACC Swimmers Of The Week

Nov. 12, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Joe Kinderwater and Rebecca Kane as well as Virginia Tech's Megan Newell have been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. Kinderwater is a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa. The Co-Women's Performers of the Week, Kane and Newell, hail from Toms River, N.J. and Ashburn, Va., respectively.

This is Kinderwater's fifth weekly honor and first in the 2008-09 season. Last week, the Tar Heel sophomore posted a pair of wins in the 500 Free (4:29.45) and 1,000 Free (9:09.44) in North Carolina's wins over Maryland (213.5-83.5) and George Mason (228-71). He now has the league's top time in the 1,000 Free and the fourth best time in the 500 Free.

Kane had four swims in North Carolina's wins over George Mason (219-80) and Maryland (181-118) on Saturday. She clocked in with first place finishes in the 50 Free (23.29) and 100 Free (50.89). Kane also swam the anchor leg of the 200 Medley Relay (1:43.28) which clocked in first. Her time of 1:51.62 in the 200 Free was good for second place. Kane now ranks first in the 50 Free and second in the 100 Free.

Both North Carolina squads improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play with the wins this weekend. The Tar Heels return to action at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. on Nov. 20, 21 and 22.
