Oct. 28, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Layne Brodie has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. The league recognition is a career first for her and it marks the second straight week a Tar Heel women's swimmer has won the award. Megan Steeves won the award a week ago. Brodie, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., was the leading point-winner at last weekend's Lady Mustang Dallas Classic which featured six teams from the CollegeSwimming.com Top-25 poll. Brodie captured second place in the 100 breast (1:02.59), 200 individual medley (2:02.93) and the 200 breast in an NCAA "B" cut time of 2:15.40. She also placed fourth in the 100 fly at 56.06. She also swam the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay (3:45.52) which clocked in for second place. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 15, finished in second behind No. 16 USC. North Carolina finished in a tie for the runner-up spot with No. 12 SMU and beat No. 23 Wisconsin, No. 25 Alabama and No. 20 Arizona State.
North Carolina (1-1) will return to the pool this weekend at home against Minnesota. The two-day dual meet between the Tar Heels and Golden Gophers will start on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. with the final session starting on Saturday at Noon.
