Matheis Earns Finalist Placing in Senior National Diving Championships

Aug. 13, 2007

STANFORD, CALIF. - University of North Carolina senior diver Erika Matheis combined with East Chapel Hill High School sophomore Julie Doran to make the finals in the three-meter springboard synchronized diving competition August 5 at the 2007 Kaiser Permanente Senior National Diving Championships in Stanford, Calif. The duo took sixth place in the competition while competing against several divers who have competed in Olympic Games.

Matheis is coached during the school year by UNC head diving coach Kevin Lawrence while Doran is coached by Lawrence as a member of the North Carolina Aquatic Club. The two divers competed for NCAC in the national event.

Doran and Matheis only made the decision to compete together earlier this summer, two weeks before their qualifying competition. The duo took first place there and then went on to take sixth at nationals with a score of 229.59 points. Matheis and Dolan also placed sixth in the prelims and quarterfinals of the event with a score of 225.18.
