Three Tar Heels Post Top 16 Finishes at U.S. Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Three Tar Heel swimmers notched Top 16 finishes Wednesday and Thursday on the second and third days of the 2007 ConocoPhillips United States Swimming Summer National Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium. Chip Peterson, Whitney Sprague and Tyler Harris all posted finishes in the consolation finals.

On Wednesday, Harris, an incoming freshman from Richmond, tied for 15th in the 400-meter individual medley. His time was 4:28.05. Harris was 12th in the preliminaries with a clocking of 4:25.34.

On Thursday, both Chip Peterson of Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., and Whitney Sprague of Bronxville, N.Y., were consolation finalists in the 400-meter freestyle. Sprague was 16th in both the prelims and the finals of the event, going 4:16.58 in the prelims and 4:17.25 in the finals.

Peterson was the No. 15 qualifier in the 400-meter freestyle at 3:55.74. The sophomore had a phenomenal evening swim with a time of 3:52.74, moving up two spots to the No. 13 finalist placing.
