Eight UNC Swimmers Head To Olympic Trials
July 1, 2004 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Eight current, former and future University of North Carolina swimmers are scheduled to compete in the 2004 United States Swimming Olympic Trials scheduled for July 7-14 at the Long Beach Swimming Center in Long Beach, Calif. Sean Quinn, Chad Ames and Lindsey Marck will each swim two events at the Olympic Trials while the other five swimmers have qualified in one event each. Quinn, a 2003 Tar Heel alumnus and native of Lancaster, S.C., will compete in both the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes. Last summer, Quinn earned the silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. Other Tar Heel men who have qualified are rising senior Reid Owen of Knoxville, Tenn., who will swim the 1500-meter freestyle; rising junior Chas Ames of Crawfordsville, Ind., who will swim the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events; and reising junior Josh Glasco of Richmond, Va., who will compete in the 200-meter butterfly. Owen and Glasco were All-America selections in those events at the 2004 NCAA Championships. Incoming freshman Lindsey Marck of Newtown, Pa., has qualified to swim in both the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events. She will be joined in the 200-meter butterfly by rising senior Jessie Brosch, a native of University Park, Md.
Whitney Smith of Richmond, Va., a 2004 Carolina graduate, will compete in the 800-meter freestyle at the Trials while rising junior Lizzy Bruce of Wichita, Kan., is slated to swim in the 100-meter breaststroke.
