North Carolina Swimming & Diving Alumni Weekend Information

June 16, 2003

Dear Carolina Swimming & Diving Alumnus/Alumna:

I am proud to be the bearer of warm tidings from The Hill! And great and exciting news as well. I am proud to announce that September 5-6, 2003 have been designated as the dates for what we hope will be the first foray into an annual event. Of course I am talking about a Carolina Swimming & Diving Alumni Weekend. In fact this is our first and I am proud to be the chair of the committee for this gala event.

So mark your calendars thusly and start to make plans for your return to Chapel Hill. I have been asked by some alumni to spearhead this project and I am honored to do so. The Reunion Committee also consists of our swimming secretary extraordinaire Sharon Wagner.

Information on hotel rooms, football tickets and other costs involved with the reunion are included on an attachment with this introductory letter. You will be able to obtain most of the information you need from that sheet. But let me take just a couple of minutes to outline briefly some of the events we have planned.

For Friday arrivals, we invite you to come to our swimming practice that September 5 beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Koury Natatorium. We will have registration tables set up in the gallery of Koury from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and light refreshments will be served at that time as well. This will be a great chance for alumni to gather, make connections with each other and get a sneak preview of the 2003-04 Tar Heels in practice. We have left Friday night open for those alumni who would like to gather in small groups but we also have the added benefit that Friday night is a Tar Heel women's soccer game against Kentucky at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. We will of course make arrangements for free admission for anyone wanting to watch that very special Carolina team that night.

We have three events scheduled for Saturday although times are not set at this point because we will have to wait and see what time the football game kicks off. That will likely depend on TV options. But be assured we plan an Alumni vs. Varsity Swimming Meet with Dave Lohse and Rhoda Osterneck taking on the duties of Honorary Coaches for the Alumni Team. I will do everything possible to rig the meet in the Alumni's favor, trust me. We will also have a magnificent North Carolina style meal after the meet catered by Bullock's of Durham. It will include BBQ, fried chicken, hush puppies, Brunswick stew, Cole slaw, sweet ice tea and all the fixings you can imagine. If you plan to eat healthy this day you may not be in luck. And to finish off the day the Tar Heel football team will be hosting the Syracuse Orangemen at Kenan Stadium. For those who may not have been back in a while, you will be thrilled to see the new Kenan Stadium. It is even more beautiful than ever.

So mark your calendars and start checking those flight options. This weekend is becoming a reality. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at 919-962-7257 or Sharon Wagner at 919-962-6000.

Go Tar Heels! And we look forward to seeing you all this fall.

Sincerely,

Dave Lohse
Associate Sports Information Director

UNC Finley Golf Course

From the steeply sloped greens to the artful drifts of wildflowers, almost everything is better at UNC Finley. Completely updated, sculpted and redesigned by internationally acclaimed golf course designer Tom Fazio, the new UNC Finley Golf Course is a proud expression of its Tar Heel heritage. Everything at UNC Finley is of the highest caliber. As the official home of the University of North Carolina Men's and Women's Golf Teams, the new 18-hole, par 72 course is unparalleled. Each hole features graduated tee markers ranging in distance from 4,981 to 7,187 yards. Seven ponds, two lakes and a variety of bunkers, creeks and wetlands offer attractive if challenging hazards. An we've changed more than just the layout. Call the Golf Shop to reserve a tee time at (919) 962-2349.

Accommodations

We have a block of 50 rooms at the Homewood Suites. Call (919) 401-0610 and ask for a room in the North Carolina Swimming Alumni block. Because of the game with Syracuse, rooms will be very hard to get. You must identify as a "UNC Swimming Alumni".
