Carolina's Men's Recruiting Class Ranked Nation's Fourth Best
June 3, 2007 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - College Swimming.com, an online information site which is the No. 1 source of data on the collegiate swimming world, has come out with its recruiting rankings for the incoming classes of 2007-08. New head coach Rich DeSelm did yeoman's work with his recruiting classes as the Tar Heel men's recruiting class is ranked No. 4 in the nation and the women's group No. 17. The men's recruiting class included eight swimmers and the women's four swimmers. The rankings were compiled based on fall 2006 signees only. Here is what College Swimming.com had to say about the men's class: "In the world of ever-expanding titles that schools give coaches - either to reward a loyal assistant or get another body on deck, 'Head Coach Designate' is a new one. But after taking at look at North Carolina's incoming men's class, it would behoove every school in the country to go out and get one. Before he even set foot on deck, HCD Rich DeSelm attracted perhaps the best recruiting class in school history. That class starts with the nation's best backstroke recruit - Josh Hafkin (Rockville, Md). One could argue that Arizona's Cory Chitwood deserves the title, but Hafkin has the added ability to be on every Tar Heel free relay. The same can be said for Tommy Whyer (Tampa, Fla.). Hafkin and the Whyer flyer will be mainstays of NCAA-caliber relays. Joe Kinderwater is one of just 10 prepsters to cross the `B' cut in his mile. The rest of the class - William Tyler Harris (Richmond, Va.), Robert Grimmet-Norris (North Bethesda, Md.), Andrew Brake (Burke, Va.), Alex Ismail (Zionsville, Ind.) and David Zolno (Austin, Texas) aren't quite NCAA-caliber but their choice to attend UNC left a lot of other schools saying, "not another one!" The scariest thing is that as good as this class is, there's not a single one from in-state. As the staff proves itself to the natives, that should change and when it does, the ACC and the national will be looking for their own 'Head Coach Designate.' The following are the comments from College Swimming.com about the UNC women's class. "17th North Carolina - For first time in Carolina history men's class might prove stronger than women's but with five seniors out of thirty depth isn't an issue. Katura Harvey (free-Montgomery, Md.) and Rebecca Kane (sprint free-Toms River, N.J.) are big-time additions."
