Young Tar Heels must make up for loss of departed seniors.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Needing to rebuild with the loss of a talented and dependable senior class, the University of North Carolina announced Tuesday that 12 new swimmers and divers will join the men's swimming and diving team in the fall of 1999.

"This is a good class and we are pleased with the young men who have decided to join us in Chapel Hill," said UNC head coach Frank Comfort. "We were able to sign two divers which was important to rebuilding the prestige of our diving program and we needed to sign a large group of swimmers to replace the likes of Tucker Shade, Ted Brisson, Tom Schmelzer and Chris Jennings."

North Carolina's men's team finished the 1998-99 season with a 10-2 record in dual-meet competition. The Tar Heels finished third at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and 30th at the NCAA Championships.

This incoming class is expected to help the Tar Heels improve on both of those performances next year.
