CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina swimmer Stephen Mohr has been named the recipient of a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, awarded recently to 58 student-athletes who are members of winter sports teams. The senior from Mequon, Wis., is the third UNC student-athlete to earn the honor this year, following soccer player Matt Crawford and volleyball player Malaika Underwood, both recipients of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for fall sports. Mohr, a team captain, carries a 3.959 grade point average and is working toward a double major in economics and business administration. He is one of two Tar Heels to receive the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete Award and also earned a 2003 ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship. Mohr ranks in the top eight in UNC swimming history in three events (400 individual medley, 1,000 freestyle, 1,650 freestyle) and earned All-ACC honors in 2001. He is the recipient of UNC's Most Dedicated Swimmer Award for 2002-03 and has been named to the ACC Honor Roll and the Dean's List throughout his career. He recently was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honor society. The $6,900 scholarships went to 29 men and 29 women who participate in NCAA winter sports - basketball, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, indoor track and field and wrestling - in Divisions I, II and III. The NCAA also awards 58 scholarship for both fall and spring sports, bringing the annual total to 174. To qualify for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better and must have performed with distinction as a member of a varsity team. Mohr is one of three ACC student-athletes - all swimmers - to win the awards. The others are Georgia Tech's Shilo Ayalon and Clemson's Jenna Burtch.
