2004-05 Tar Heel Swimming & Diving Teams Honored At Banquet
April 27, 2005 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams honored their 2004-05 squads at the annual team banquet Wednesday evening at the Pope Box of Kenan Stadium. Junior Josh Glasco (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Lindsey Marck (Newtown, Pa.) were dual winners on Wednesday as they both won the Richard Jamerson Memorial Awards as the Most Outstanding and Most Valuable Swimmers for their respective teams. The Tar Heel swimming and diving coaching staff chose the winners of all the awards given out Wednesday evening. The Most Outstanding Award is recognition for a single specific swim during the season. Marck was chosen for her career best 1:58.79 swum in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2004 Nike Cup. Glasco was feted for his school record swim of 1:44.60 in the 200-yard butterfly which he clocked in the preliminaries at the 2004 Nike Cup. Both Glasco and Marck were also recognized as their squad's most valuable swimmers for their season-long performances. Glasco was the only Tar Heel man to earn All-ACC honors and he was an honorable mention All-America in the 200-yard butterfly. Marck was third in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events at the ACC meet and she secured an NCAA invite in both events as well. The third in the Richard Jamerson Memorial Award winners are those swimmers who win Most Improved honors. Freshman Kelly Woodruff (Shoreline, Wash.) won the women's award and the men's award was shared by sophomore Casey Kott (Morrisville, N.C.) and freshman Philip Owen (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Woodruff earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors as a freshman and earned a bid to the 2005 NCAA Championships after recording career best times in the 400-yard individual medley (4:16.68) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.60). Kott earned his award for his progress this season to 20.60 in the 50-yard freestyle and to 45.28 in the 100-yard freestyle. Owen swam career best times at the ACC Championships in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:40.10, 500-yard freestyle at 4:26.39 and 1650-yard freestyle at 15:25.66. Sophomore Erin Cutrell (Ligonier, Pa.) was the winner of the Andrea Erben Memorial Award as the Women's Most Dedicated Swimmer and sophomore Aaron Burns (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was the recipient of the Bruce Webster Memorial Award as the Men's Most Dedicated Swimmer. Cutrell had season best times of 4:54.07 in the 500-yard freestyle and 4:25.92 in the 400-yard individual medley at the ACC Championships. Burns recorded his season bests at the ACC Meet in the two breaststroke events, 56.19 at 100 yards at 2:04.59 at 200 yards. The Hill Carrow Spirit Award recipients were senior Jessie Brosch (University Park, Md.) for the women and junior Jon Van Assen (Matawan, N.J.) for the men. Brosch also won the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award for the women while senior John Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va.) took similar honors for the men. The outstanding divers were rewarded with the David F. McInnis Diving Awards. Both winners were finalists at the 2005 ACC Championships - junior gia Santoro (Stratford, Conn.) for the Tar Heel women and freshman Ben Herboth (Charlotte, N.C.) for the Carolina men's squad. Santoro earned All-ACC honors by finishing third in one-meter diving. Herboth finished fourth in one-meter diving and fifth in three-meter diving at the league championship in his rookie season. Several Tar Heels were also awarded with the annual recognition given to the outstanding strength and conditioning student-athletes on each team. Sophomore breaststroker Marissa Nilon (Kennett Square, Pa.) represented the Tar Heel women's squad in this area while Casey Kott and Jon Van Assen won on the men's side, both garnering their second awards of the evening. The diving award was merited by sophomore Laura Filip (Durham, N.C.).
