Tar Heel Swimmers & Divers Feted At Annual Banquet
April 24, 2003 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina swimming and diving program held its annual banquet Thursday evening at the Kenan Stadium Pope Box on the UNC campus with team award winners for 2002-2003 being announced at that time. Seniors Stephen Mohr and Sean Quinn each carried home two awards as 16 different individuals won some type of award. The Jamerson Memorial Awards, named for the founding coach of Carolina swimming, Dr. Richard Jamerson, were given to the teams most valuable, most outstanding and most improved swimmers. The most valuable swimmers were senior Sean Quinn (Lancaster, S.C.) and senior Christy Watkins (Winter Springs, Fla.). Recipients of the most outstanding awards were junior Yuri Suguiyama (Ijamsville, Md.) and junior Jessi Perruquet (Danville, Pa.). The most improved winners were freshman Josh Glasco (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Elizabeth Bruce (Wichita, Kan.). Strength and conditioning awards went to one swimmer and one diver on each team. The swimming winners were senior Michael Chenier (Goldsboro, N.C.) and Gena Bittner (Beaufort, N.C.). The diving winners were senior Stephen Krebs (Annandale, Va.) and junior Jennifer Rehm (Chapel Hill, N.C.). The co-winners of the Class of 1989 Most Dedicated Swimmer Awards for the women's team were junior Becky Acker (Richmond, Va.) and junior Kelly Weeks (Raleigh, N.C.). Senior Stephen Mohr (Mequon, Wis.) won the Bruce Webster Memorial Award as the most dedicated swimmer on the Tar Heel men's team. The Osterneck Family Unsung Hero Awards were presented to seniors Hal Wansley (Charlotte, N.C.) and P.J. Wallin (Grand Rapids, Mich.). There were three recipients of the Hill Carrow Spirit Awards--senior Janna Turner (Raleigh, N.C.) for the women's team and seniors Sean Quinn (Lancaster, S.C.) and Stephen Mohr (Mequon, Wis.) as co-winners on the men's side.
The winner of the Class of 1940 Blue Dolphin Award for service to the UNC swimming program went to long-time Tar Heel administrative assistant to the swimming and diving program, Ms. Sharon Wagner.
