Four From UNC Receive Arthur Ashe Awards

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four University of North Carolina student-athletes have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Black Issues in Higher Education. The honorees are recognized in the April 10th issue of the organization's journal.

Two UNC volleyball players are recipients of the annual awards. Senior Malaika Underwood was named to the volleyball first team and junior Aletha Green was named to the volleyball second team.

Senior Ronald Brewer was named to the football second team. Junior Yuri Suguiyama was named to the nine-member men's swimming and diving team.

Underwood, from San Diego, Calif., is majoring in international studies and carries a 3.82 GPA. Green, from Poway, Calif., is majoring in information science and carries a 3.2 GPA.

Brewer, from Chesapeake, Va., is majoring in exercise and sport science and carries a 3.30 cumulative GPA after earning a 3.86 in the fall semester. Suguiyama, from Ijamsville, Md.. is working toward a double major in political science and economics has a GPA of 3.53.

Criteria for the award include a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and a record of campus or community service. The award is open to students of color who have completed at least one academic year at their current institution.
