Four Tar Heels Begin NCAA Competition Thursday

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - Four members of the University of North Carolina swimming and diving team will compete in the 2004 NCAA Division I Championship beginning Thursday at the Goodwill Games Aquatics Center located in scenic Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y. The Long Island Aquatic Club is serving as host of the 2004 event. Tar Heels in the meet are seniors Yuri Suguiyama and Eric Poitras, junior Reid Owen and sophomore Josh Glasco.

Poitras, a diver from Regina, Saskatchewan, will compete in all three diving events off the one-meter and three-meter springboards and the 10-meter platform event.

Suguiyama, from Ijamsville, Md., is the No. 16 seed in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:21.27. In the 200-meter freestyle he has the No. 32 seed at 1:37.33. He is also seeded No. 16 in the 1500-meter freestyle at 15:11.86.

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Owen is seeded No. 42 in the 400-meter freestyle at 4:24.85. Owen is seeded No. 19 in the 1500-meter freestyle at 15:14.30.

Glasco, a Richmond, Va., native, will compete in the 200-meter butterfly where he is seeded No. 20 at 1:46.12.
